Worship

Worship Planning Team

FACILITATOR:  Florence Schorschinsky 

Help design our worship services!  We're always looking for creative people that have a feel for effectively communicating the gospel within our culture. 

The worship planning team meets monthly to plan the worship service at SMLC.  Decisions concerning music, worship format, and special services like Christmas and Easter are made during these meetings.

Sound System Team

COORDINATOR:  Happy Wade  

If you have a good ear for music and speaking, aren't a musician, or a gifted speaker, we need you on the Sound System Team!  You will be trained on using our sound system, and will rotate with other team members each month.

Ushers

COORDINATOR:  David & Kathren Miller (8:30 am) ;  Happy Wade (11:00 AM)     

Ushering is a great way to assist in the worship service in a functional way.  Ushers give out bulletins, take up the offering, assist members and visitors with special needs, and manage the 'traffic flow' of people during communion.  Ushers serve on a rotating basis throughout the year.

Tape Resource Team

COORDINATOR:  Bob Trapp  

Help to organize and maintain our cassette tape library.  This team is responsible for the taping of our Sunday morning worship services, and are provided to those people who can't always be at church, especially our homebound and shut-in members.

Contemporary Service Music Team

Do you sing or play a musical instrument?  Consider joining the Contemporary Service Music Team and leading the 8:30 am contemporary worship service twice a month.  Rehearsals are twice a month on Tuesday evenings.

Offering Counters

Help count cash offerings and prepare weekly cash deposits.

Time commitment: 1 hour on Monday mornings.  You'll be scheduled on a rotating basis.

Worship and Music Committee

FACILITATOR:  Linda Riesz 

The purpose of the committee is to offer ideas and suggestions for the enhancement of our worship of God on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings.

This committee gathers monthly or as needed to support each other in prayer, study, and spiritual growth.  During their meetings, they give and exchange ideas on worship content and styles, musical selections, and possible sermon themes.  They also provide support for the pastors, and for the music director and organist, and help fill gaps in needed worship positions.

Home Bound Communion Committee

FACILITATOR:  Peg Fitzsimmons  

The home bound communion team is a group of lay people trained to distribute communion to our home bound members.  This team gathers quarterly or as needed to support each other in prayer, study, and spiritual growth.  Team members make an average of 6 home visits every 3 months.

Acolytes

COORDINATOR:  Nancy Magruder  

Volunteers, who are teenagers, are needed who can serve as acolytes in our Sunday morning worship services.  Acolytes assist in the worship services by serving as crucifer, lighting of the candles, receiving the offerings, and collecting the glasses during holy communion.  Training is provided, and assignments are made a year in advance.

Little Luther and Luther Choirs

The Little Luther Choir is open to all children from age 4 through 2nd grade, and the Luther Choir is open to all children from 3rd through 5th grade.  Rehearsals are on Sunday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:00.  The choir sings on special occasions throughout the year.

Lay Readers

Flower Ministry

The purpose of this ministry is to enhance and beautify our worship facilities as we live out our mission at SMLC.  If you are interested in honoring a loved one or the memory of a loved one, consider signing up on the flower board (posted in August) to provide a flower arrangement for one of our worship services.  Some spaces are vacant during the year which can be taken by contacting Mary McSwain.

Altar Guild

COORDINATOR:  Karin Cook  

The purpose of this ministry is to serve the Lord by preparing the church and altar for worship.  Members of the altar guild work in small groups to prepare the church for Saturday night and Sunday morning worship services.  The altar guild is responsible for the preparation of the altar and the church to celebrate the rites and ceremonies of Communion, Baptism, Marriage, Confirmation, and the Burial of the Dead.  Altar guild members are arranged in teams and are assigned to serve regularly throughout the year.

Communion Assistants

Spiritual Formation Group

The goal of Spiritual Formation is to form a deeper personal relationship with God. The secret of spiritual formation is balance, knowledge, encouragement, and accountability.  These small groups gather with one purpose in mind – to become better disciples of Jesus Christ.

Crossways Bible Study

Crossways is a four semester class that covers the entire Bible plus the intertestamental period. Students may audit the class without purchasing materials; however, the $60 cost for 60 units is an exceptional bargain. Couples or good friends may be willing to share a set of materials. As students are able, they will be encouraged to purchase a good study Bible.   

Because Crossways will be an on-going program at St. Matthew's, students may begin anywhere in the cycle with the knowledge that they will eventually be able to receive teaching on all 60 units.

Crusaders Adult Sunday School

Max Lucado's A Thirst for God provides the framework for a semester-long study of prayer this fall.  The book will be available September 12 in class for $6.85, which includes tax and shipping.   There is a brief syllabus for this course to accompany distribution of the textbook on September 12. Via De Cristo

Literally meaning "way of Christ", Via de Cristo is a short course in Christianity that is designed to provide all Christians with a significant foundation for individual and community spiritual growth. Grace and Growth are combined in an exciting and energetic way.  At Via de Cristo the participants become increasingly aware that they are part of a community abounding in God's grace. The three days are a triple encounter: with Christ; with Christian brothers and sisters; and with a Christian community.

New Disciples Class

Pastor Sam Zumwalt teaches these four-session classes which allow new disciples (members) to begin building relationships at St. Matthew's. During the four sessions, Pastor Zumwalt explains how Lutheran Christians understand Baptism, Holy Communion, and Worship. In the fourth session, attendees meet key congregational leaders and discover how they can connect more deeply with congregational life.

The purpose of the evangelism committee is to keep the congregation's focus on those who do not know Jesus and who are not part of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.

This committee gathers monthly or as needed to support ach other in prayer, study, and spiritual growth.  They review the congregation's pulse in its evangelism passion, and they come up with ways to keep inviting others into an encounter with Jesus Christ.  This committee occasionally spins off other teams who focus on such projects as Alpha, mass mailings, advertising, new member classes, and campus-wide ministry at UNCW.

Greeters

Do you like to meet people?  Do you like seeing old friends and meeting new ones?  Do you like to see visitors enjoy worship and come back?  Then contact Vera, and sign up to be a greeter.  Arrive early for Saturday night or Sunday morning worship and bring your smiling face and warmest greeting for others.

Habitat for Humanity

Assist throughout the year with the building of homes for needy families in the Wilmington area.  The time commitment for these projects is ongoing, and requires participants to be at least 18 years old.  Younger teenagers can participate with the appropriate parental consent form.

Bulk Mail Volunteers

Seaman's Center

Volunteers are needed for 3 hours per week to act as host or hostess at the Seaman's Center.  Seaman coming to the Center are typically foreign born and spend approximately 9 to 10 months aboard a cargo ship each year.  These cargo ships frequent our port on the Cape Fear River.  Volunteers who are mechanically inclined are also needed who can repair bicycles, and do some other odd jobs for our foreign visitors.

This committee reviews the congregation's present fellowship needs and develops and implements ways to enhance and affirm them.  This committee provides for monthly and/or quarterly covered dish brunches, lunches, and dinners, and also provides for other growth oriented spiritual events.  The committee is responsible for Sunday morning refreshments, and finding creative ways to help people feel welcome and at ease in the SMLC environment.

Hospitality Visitation Team

The hospital visitation team is a group of lay caregivers trained to visit and make telephone calls to those in our congregation who are hospitalized or in long term care facilities. This team gathers quarterly or an needed to support each other in prayer, study, and spiritual growth.  Team members make an average of 3 hospital and/or long term care visits per week.

Stephen Ministry Team

Christ caring for people through other people is the primary purpose of Stephen Ministers.  Stephen Ministers are lay people who are intensively trained to provide one-on-one Christian care to hurting people in our congregation, in need of healing and hope.

Handbell Choir

Church Council

Social Ministry Committee

The purpose of the social ministry committee is to lift up the needs of the disadvantaged in our community and world.  This committee gathers monthly or as needed to help coordinate and support the numerous social outreach ministries of the congregation.  This committee supports each other in prayer, study, and spiritual growth.  They coordinate information sharing to the congregation on certain projects, provide encouragement to sub-teams running on their own with outreach projects, help develop new sub-teams as needed in project areas, and help rally the congregation on congregational-wide outreach and service opportunities.

Lutheran Student Movement (LSM)

Blood Mobile Team

The purpose of this committee is to help the members of the congregation grow as stewards of God's blessings and to lift up the financial and talent needs of the congregation so God's work at S. Matthew's can thrive.

This committee gathers monthly or as needed to support each other in prayer, study, and spiritual growth.  During their meetings, they organize seminars and workshops, andplan temple talks and newsletter articles to inspire maturing stewards. This committee also plans and organizes the congregations annual Ministry

Audit Team

FACILITATOR: Elmer Wild 

Volunteers, who have an accounting or financial background are needed to serve on the Church Audit Team which is composed of three or four people who work together annually, to review the financial records of the church.  Following a complete review of church financial records, recommendations, if deemed necessary are then made to church council for implementation.
