Daily Lectionary - Year Two, Week of 14 Pentecost
Prayer of the Day
O Lord, mercifully continue to purify and defend your Church. Since she cannot stand firmly without your power, govern her always by your grace. Through Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
My 2010 commitment to faithfully witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
-
Pray daily for these friends and loved ones who are unchurched. Make a list of names and pray for each person individually each day.
-
Pray for myself as a baptized child of God.
Merciful Father, through Holy Baptism you called us to be your own possession. Grant that our lives may evidence the working of your Holy Spirit to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, according to the image of your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
-
Pray for those outside the Church.
Almighty and everlasting God, you desire not the death of a sinner but that all would repent and live. Hear our prayers for those outside the Church. Take away their iniquity and turn them from their false gods to you, the living and true God. Gather them into your holy Church to the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
-
Pray for the return of the wayward and erring.
Almighty and most gracious God and Father, we implore you to turn the hearts of all who have forsaken the faith once delivered to your Church, especially those who have wandered from it or are in doubt through the corruption of your truth. Mercifully visit and restore them that in gladness of heart they may take pleasure in your Word and be made wise to salvation through faith in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
-
Invite those you have prayed for to attend worship with you.
What to say: "I am worshiping at St. Matthew's this weekend at the (name the time) service. I would love to have you worship with me. Will you join me for worship?" Offer to pick up the person or to meet her or him inside the front glass doors by the circular drive. Consider inviting her or him to share a meal or coffee with you after worship. If the person says no, thank them for considering your invitation and then keep praying and keep inviting. A very experienced witness said that it may take seven invitations before getting a yes.
