The Rev. Dr. Samuel Zumwalt, a.k.a. "Pastor Sam," serves as Senior Pastor. This is Pr. Sam's 30th anniversary of ordination year, which means he's both very comfortable in his skin and still has a lot of energy and enthusiasm for mission and ministry. Pastor Sam's goal is to serve, God willing, for another 20 years in full-time pastoral work.

Pr. Sam and Laura married in 2002 and in July 2004 moved to Wilmington from Austin TX, where he served for nine years as Senior Pastor of a large downtown church. Laura is presently staying at home with pre-school daughter Clare, but Laura, an attorney, previously served as Assistant General Counsel of the State Bar of Texas. The Zumwalt family treasures their family time together and enjoys the incredible geographical and cultural diversity of North Carolina.

Having served early on as a clinical resident in a major trauma hospital in Dallas TX, Pr. Sam is a skilled pastoral caregiver and is also a trained Stephen Ministry Leader. He devotes significant time to sermon preparation and Bible study. Pastor Sam teaches the Crossways Bible study on Wednesdays and Thursdays, a Monday evening interactive study of one of the gospels, leads a noonday Monday sermon study group known as Conversations, teaches adult Sunday school, midweek Confirmation instruction, and occasional adult discipleship classes.

Many years ago, Pr. Sam learned first-hand from his internship supervisor that a congregation can rise above a soul-numbing, country club mindset that is antithetical to Christian discipleship. He invites you to hear the Lord Jesus' call: "Follow me!"
